Men visit their doctors less often than women, they also tend to ignore the early warning signs of disease. Getting them to go for regular check-ups can be difficult.

Men's Health Month is a good reminder for men to take time out to check their health. That means screening for your cardiovascualr risk factors even if you're in your twenties. It also means that you should take stock of your mental health and that you should see a healthcare professional if you're not coping. Contrary to male myths, depression and stress can kill you.

If you're over 40 you also need to speak to your doctor about screening for prostate cancer.

If you have a family history of prostate or breast cancer you are at  increased for prostate cancer. If you are a black African male you are also at increased risk.
